Doom Town: The People and Landscape of Atomic Testing     In the Knowledge Center by the @One there is a new exhibition about the landscape and people surrounding atomic testing sites. This exhibition is based on the graphic history book by UNLV historian Andy Kirk and artist Kristian Purcell. The book is published by Oxford University Press in 2017. The exhibit focuses on the above ground detonation at the Nevada Testing Site between the years 1953 and 1961. There were several reasons for the testing. Officially, this testing helped advance the technology and power of nuclear weapons. Unofficially, scientists were there to test the effects of radiation from the bombs on the surrounding environment, including the landscape, native plants, animals and the people. Referred to as “human guinea pigs” the people tested were mainly employees at the site and military personnel. But the effects has affected individuals downwind from the site in southern Utah. This ex...

I have completed part one (the map story) of my project. I just need feedback on the outcome. Story Maps My next step is to start on the physical book that will be part of the display. Here is the sketch of how I would like the book to look.

Project Update 10/24/17

Unfortunately, I was unable to devote enough time to putting in the content of my work into the map I created. I will work on this next weekend. For the display in the gallery I will need the following: 1. I will need to look at what is left over from the Art 343 booking making project. I would like to not buy material that can be used from that. 2. I will need a pedestal for my display.

Mapping Project Story Maps Story Maps Concepts: Sights of Rapes Legislation involving consent and/or Rape Sights of culture changes Teaching new ideas of consent. Gallery Display For the physical gallery portion of the project I am creating a accordion style book similar to the one created by Julie Chen. It it on display now in the gallery but the @One.  The piece is called "Time". It is an accordion style book with section created to hold tea bags filled with different leaves. I chose this style because i like the way it looks and I can put things in the sections. I plan on creating a QR code for the viewer to login and see the map part of this project.

Last week I walked some of the art  exhibition featured on campus. The gallery by the @one has a serious of book and map collections on display. In the photo above is a piece done by my favorite book artist Julie Chen. This work is an accordion style book designed with pockets. In each pocket is a tag with a type of plant on it.  My idea is to take this accordion style book, similar to Julie Chen's piece, and tailor it to my theme. Each pocket will have several written messages in each about consent and the stages of sex education. The materials I will need are the standard required to create a book. I have watched tutorials on YouTube and have reached out to my Book Arts 414 teacher to see if she could help when I eventually get struck.  The second part of my project is to incorporate what I have watched into my project. At first, I thought I would create a digital short about consent. However, there is a lot of information out there fro...

Class Draft Proposal: Teaching Consent

Image
A few weeks ago I was browsing Facebook, when I came across a video teaching young children around the age of three about consent . It was a surprise to me because my immediately react was these children were too young to be taught sex and relationships. But that was not what the video was about. Instead, this video showed a preschool teaching these children about understanding the meanings of yes and no, as well as, the importance that they alone have control over their bodies and only they can give permission for others to touch them physically. It was an extremely powerful video to watch. One that made me realize we, as a society had failed to educate our children on the importance of their permission regarding physical touch.             Although this video had nothing to do with sex, it does paly an extremely important role in sex education. This video is a hard reality about the  rape culture here in the...
